Re: James Craig Anderson Case
To Whom it May Concern,
A recently formed coalition of Mississippi organizations called Mississippians Together, is writing to request a
thorough investigation of the death of James Craig Anderson who was intentionally beaten by a mob and run over
by Daryl Dedmon, on June 26, 2011. We are outraged by the brutal killing of Mr. Anderson and by the fact that
no other individuals involved in this hate crime have been charged with murder or as accessories to the murder.
Our coalition intends to monitor the case and to seek justice for the victim.
The Hinds County District Attorney reported that this crime was clearly racially motivated by a mob of teens
from Rankin County. Initially only two individuals were charged with this crime. However, Aaron Rice, who
was originally charged with murder, had charges later reduced to Simple Assault (a misdemeanor) by Judge
William Barnett.
There is a perception in the community that there are two systems of justice, one for people of color, and one for
whites. Previous cases have shown that crimes involving black teens, in similar circumstances to Dedmon's mob,
have been immediately arrested and charged in connection to the crime.
Our expectations are as follows:
- That equal justice is applied in Hinds County, MS,
- That a thorough investigation be held,
- All who were involved in this heinous action be held accountable.
- That no prosecutorial misconduct take place,
- Accountability for investigative misconduct.
